Folk Style Test 2024

Folk Style Certification (needed to officiate Folk style for AUSAW)

Can I officiate Folk Style?  You can , IF you do not already have a current NFHS certificate and are a High School wrestler with 2 years of Folk Style experience and can prove your knowledge of the NFHS Folk style rules by passing this exam.  This exam is open book either paper copy or from NFHS ALLACCESS Mobile application (free to set up an account and pay as you go for rule books. About $8 per book).

What is nice about the electronic version is you can do word search easily.

Message from the Mat Officials Director (Jerry Glynn) January 2024

Greetings my friends, First let me thank you for reading this and being interested in contributing to Alaska wrestling.  All the information you need is on-line.

If you think you might want to be a Mat official:  Here is information you need.  Coaches and athletes feel free to review any and all Mat official instructional material.

• *An Official Must be at least 13 years old*and have 2 years wrestling Freestyle/Greco experience

• Follow the instructions for Membership renewal - Link

• 18 yrs & older must do background check (might take 3 or more days)

• Everyone must do SAFESPORT presentation video & get Certified. THEN you can pay & become a registered Wrestling Leader aka mat official.  There are 3 refreshers available currently before you must complete the whole course again.

• Go to USWOA.com (the USA Wrestling Officials Webpage) Link look under the menu for Officials Education

1. Art of Refereeing 2024 9th edition (open it on-line - printing is not recommended) Art of Refereeing:

https://www.uswoa.com/page/show/5954692-education-opportunities

2. Download rule book – it also has links to videos - LINK  the most current rule book in on-line

(in other words, if you Print a rule book it could be outdated the minute you pull it off the printer)

 Other Educational materials available

·Video of the Day – is available from March – late July on-line, and other social media options

·Quiz Question of the Day - is available from March – late July on-line, and other social media options

·Training Webinars - Several archived YouTube training webinars on officiating and training on TrackWrestling and FLO Arena tournament management software

·OEP (Officials Education Program) - A series of videos on the different aspects of Greco-Freestyle Officiating.  OEO's are sometimes offered as in-person seminars before State, Regional National and National Competitions. These are usually out-of-state opportunities for in-person classes recently they moved on-line.

·Teaching Articles - Several archived articles written by officials on aspects of officiating wrestling.

• Concussion Training: Many states are now requiring officials to go through Concussion Protocol Training.  If you have not completed a concussion course we highly suggest you complete the Free concussion training which is found through the USAW Membership System, Log in to your membership, manage, heads up concussion

online training. Especially if you travel to officiate Regional and National competitions.  The Heads Up Training can now be taken by logging into the USAW membership system and use the "Manage" pull-down menu at the top and click on "Heads Up Concussion".  This certification will then print on your membership card.

Again Download “The Art of Refereeing Freestyle & Greco Wrestling” AND STUDY IT!!

• There will be IN PERSON and ZOOM rules clinics before the season and a short review ONE HOUR before wrestling starts at the tournament (be there)

• AUSAW furnishes the shirt, whistle and arm bands

• Contact me so I know you are interested in officiating and when I have your email address, I can contact you with information/etc…

I know the information provided above, when studied, will make you a better official and also a better wrestler.

It is never one and done – I read the Art of the Referee and the Complete Rule book every year, many times.

 Let’s get ready to WRESTLE!!

AUSAW Requires a Wrestling Leader Membership to Coach or Officiate

AUSAW is requiring that athletes who will also be coaching or officiating obtain a Wrestling Leader Membership as well as the athlete membership.

AUSAW is NOT accepting Event Volunteer for coaching or officiating.

All Coaches, Pairing Officials & Mat Officials MUST have a current Wrestling Leader Membership.

Please direct any questions to AlaskaUSAW@gmail.com

Safe Sport Certification

AUSAW Coaches & Officials,

The Safe Sport Certification is now a mandatory requirement from USAW for ALL Coaches and Officials from the minimum 13 year old age and up.  Again, this pertains to all of them, no longer just those 18 and up.  As it is for any Coach that bought a two year membership last year, the same applies to any 13-17 year old Coach or Official that renewed their membership prior to this going into affect in the Membership system, they to now must also go back in and complete Safe Sport to be eligible to Coach or Officiate at any AUSAW tournaments and for that matter, for any Coach working in any Club's practice room as well.  Please take this requirement very seriously and enforce among yourselves and within your clubs.

The following is from Tony Black, Director of State Services at USAW: We are fully aware that this is incredibly sensitive material to discuss, as all types of abuse, misconduct (whether sexual or not), and grooming behaviors are sensitive by nature.  The requirement is in place for anyone who is in a position of authority in USA Wrestling, and any other youth sport organization that is part of the Olympic Movement.

If you feel as though this is not appropriate for your 13-17 year old son or daughter to be exposed to this education at this moment, that is certainly something that we respect.  It does mean, however, that he or she will not be able to be a member official and/or coach of USA Wrestling.

Thank you,

Bob Ottum

AUSAW Vice Chairman
