AUSAW Team Alaska had a fantastic summer. We hosted a 10 day camp in Anchorage in June. Following the camp, Team Alaska sent out several duals teams to the Turf Wars in Pocatello, ID. For the first time, Team Alaska was able to put together a Women’s dual team. From Pocatello, our Junior level (high school age) men’s and women’s dual teams traveled by van, to Colorado Springs, where they practiced at the Olympic Training Center. From there, we drove to Tulsa, OK for the National Duals Tournament. This was a national event with top wrestlers from many states in attendance. Then, it was back to Alaska for a short break before most of those wrestlers + others met in Fairbanks for a 10 day intensive prep camp for the US Marine Corps/USAW Junior & Cadet National Championships in Fargo ND. Overall, Team Alaska did better than they have done in many, many, years. We returned home with 3 women and 4 men who became All Americans. We are proud of Team Alaska, their hard work & their success. If you would like to know/see more about this team, take a look at our Facebook page “Team Alaska Wrestling”.

2018 Team Alaska season brings more growth to our agenda and what we are looking for. This year we are adding 3 new things as far as dual teams.
First we have taken Cadet and Junior dual teams (boys and girls) to Turf Wars with great success. The goal for this group was to move to the Junior National Dual level in the third year. We truly have seen the Team Alaska wrestlers become more competitive at the National level with the ability to move to Junior National duals. This will be with both the girls team and the boys team. This will be at Tulsa, OK. starting 19 June 2018.
Turf Wars at Pocatello, ID will be on the 15th and 16th of June just before the Western States Championships. The Turf War duals at Pocatello have always been before the tournament but we are trying to get the information out early. In the past we have lost some good wrestlers for middle school due to parents buying tickets before we recruited the wrestlers. The major thing now is there is both middle school and elementary duals.the Middle school dual will do Greco on the 15th and then Freestyle on the 16th. Elementary duals will be on the 16th of June. We will also try and fill a high school team to continue to build the wrestlers at that age.
The Turf War duals for the younger wrestlers would be a huge mistake not to participate in. This gets the wrestlers double the matches for the trip and raises them into a new culture of competition. Having Team Alaska in the duals the past 2 years has dynamically changed the concept of what Team Alaska has become. We are noticing that people want to be apart of something bigger and to achieve success as a team and not just separate groups.
I truly appreciate the push from all the clubs, the welcome and support of what we are building as a wrestling community has been amazing. please contact me if you have any questions at teamalaskawrestling@gmail.com
